About This Blog

Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973) was the greatest economist of my time. His greatest works can be accessed here at no charge.

Mises believed that property, freedom and peace are and should be the hallmarks of a satisfying and prosperous society. I agree. Mises proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the prospect for general and individual prosperity is maximized, indeed, is only possible, if the principle of private property reigns supreme. What's yours is yours. What's mine is mine. When the line between yours and mine is smudged, the door to conflict opens. Without freedom (individual liberty of action) the principle of private property is neutered and the free market, which is the child of property and freedom and the mother of prosperity and satisfaction, cannot exist. Peace is the goal of a prosperous and satisfying society of free individuals, not peace which is purchased by submission to the enemies of property and freedom, but peace which results from the unyielding defense of these principles against all who challenge them.

In this blog I measure American society against the metrics of property, freedom and peace.

THIS Is Why The House GOP Leadership Must Go!

Read this news report from last Thursday, August 2, 2012:
The Republican-led House of Representatives voted in favor of expanding the Bush-era tax cuts for all income levels.

The Job Protection and Recession Prevention Act was passed in the House Wednesday night and would extend the tax cuts through 2013. It's the House's response to a Senate version that would let the tax cuts expire for those making more than $250,000 a year, while keeping tax relief in place for middle class and low income families.
Do you see the problem?

On Wednesday House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) boasted that the American people are "tired of the gimmicks, they’re tired of the process, just solve the problem and move on.” Human Events reported McCarthy's statement under this headline: McCarthy: House GOP unafraid to extend Bush tax cuts.

Did you get all that, folks? The House GOP is "unafraid" to extend the Bush tax cuts and "solve the problem." Ooooooo! How manly! How courageous! How principled!

Saturday morning in his GOP radio address, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor doubled down. He boasted that "House Republicans, joined by 19 Democrats, passed a bill to stop the looming tax hike that will hit all Americans next year." He gloated that "now is NOT the time to be raising taxes on small business job-creators and the hardworking taxpayers of this country."

You know why I'm not quaking in admiration for these self-described "brave" men?

Read the news item at the top of this page again. The bill the GOP passed extending the tax cuts extends them only through 2013! This despite the foreknowledge that their bill was going nowhere in the Senate and certainly wasn't going to be signed by the President!

These clueless morons are playing establishment politics again. They brag that now is not the time to raise taxes, but they think, apparently, that 2014 is!

Cantor points out that there are "millions of Americans...trying to decide whether to open a new business..." He thinks one year of tax relief will make that decision a no brainer! According to Wikipedia Cantor worked in his family's business for 10 years "doing legal work and real estate development" before becoming a career politician. Good for him, but doing legal work is not being an entrepreneur. This guy knows nothing about owning a business.

The single most critical problem business owners, small or large, have in this country is that they can't see over the horizon! They are sitting tight rather than expanding because the future is UNCERTAIN! They don't know how much that extra employee or two is going to cost them thanks to ObamaCare. They don't know how their expected profits on new expansion might be taxed. And if they themselves are unable to get off the dime, they have no reason to believe their customers will either. "What else," they're asking, "is coming down the pike!"

If House Republican Leadership truly believed in the principle of private property, individual liberty and entrepreneurship, then they would seek not only to extend the Bush tax cuts permanently, but they would also make a serious effort to cut government spending and the federal tax burden even beyond the Bush tax cuts...permanently!

And don't tell me that things will get better once Romney is elected and the GOP wins a majority in the Senate. So long as Boehner, Cantor and McCarthy run the House and Mitch McConnell is in charge of the Senate, the country's entrepreneurs are doomed to more of this same UNCERTAINTY.

It is absolutely essential that after this election the House and Senate leadership change. I would feel a whole lot more comfortable expanding my business if Jim DeMint or Rand Paul and Michele Bachmann were in charge of Congress.

When the Democrats won control over both Houses of Congress they didn't put ideological pantywaists in charge. They saddled us with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, two of the most aggressive leftists they could find. The result? ObamaCare. These two scoundrels never tired. They never backed down. Despise them all you want, but they did what was required and rammed ObamaCare through by hook and by crook.

Does anyone seriously believe John Boehner and Mitch McConnell have the cohones to do whatever is necessary to repeal ObamaCare? Or to pass permanent and significant tax relief? Or to decimate federal spending? Or to snatch this country away from the scheming hands of establishment politicians and give it back to the nation's individuals?

Yeah, right!

There are a couple of lines from the 1952 movie Clash By Night which are apropos:
Confidence! I want a man to give me confidence, somebody to fight off the blizzards and the floods, somebody to beat off the world when it tries to swallow you up.
And:
Aren't there any more comfortable men in this world? Now they're all little and nervous like sparrows or big and worried like sick bears. Men!

I don't know if the Tea Party types will have ebough to pull off a coup in the House. It's possible. Boehner definetly needs to go. I would love to see the House controled by people like Buchannan , Paul Ryan, and Allen West. The Senate will be even harder. Rand Paul would be great but he is still in his first term. Tom Coburn? I don't know when his term is up but he has promised not to run again. Scott Brown is better than Ted Kennedy but just barely. Who else do we have?

I don't know the politics of the thing, but don't forget that after this election there should be a lot more Tea Party Congressmen and Senators. So maybe a first or second term person could get elected.

The problem is the establishment, i.e., the career politicians. Paul Ryan and Michele Bachmann have read Mises, but Ryan is edging toward establishment. Larry has good things to say about Coburn.

I really think new blood would be best, or blood that bleeds the right ideology, like Demint. Maybe a guy like Ron Johnson [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Johnson_%28Wisconsin_politician%29 ] from Wisconsin would stand a chance. He's a genuine entrepreneur and business owner and has the right ideology.
